ADVISORY:

Motion to invite Dalai Lama to Australian Senate

WHAT:
Senators Sarah Hanson-Young and Nick Xenophon will on Thursday move a
motion extending an invitation to His Holiness the Dalai Lama to address
the Senate chamber on November 26 2009, during his visit to Australia at
the end of this year.

His Holiness, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has addressed the European
Parliament, and is due to address the United States Congress and meet
with President Barack Obama at the end of September.

The Australian All-Party Parliamentary Group for Tibet says extending an
invitation to His Holiness to sit on the floor of the Senate, and
address the chamber, would represent an opportunity for the Australian
Parliament to add its voice to the chorus of international support for
Tibet's right to genuine autonomy.

The text of the motion follows.

We give notice that, on Thursday August 20, we shall move:

That the Senate

(a)	Extends an invitation to His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, to sit in
the distinguished visitors gallery on the floor of the Senate during
Question Time, on the last sitting day of 2009, Thursday November 26.

WHEN:
Motion to be moved at approximately 3.30pm, Thursday 20 August 2009

WHERE:
Senate chamber, Parliament House

WHO:
Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, Greens Senator for South Australia and
Greens spokesperson for Human Rights, and member of the Australian
All-Party Parliamentary Group for Tibet
