Senate Calls for Human Rights in Xinjiang

Following the visit to Australia of Uighur Leader Rebiya Kadeer, the
Senate today passed the following motion moved by Australian Greens
Leader Senator Bob Brown:


1.	Notes the violent unrest in Xinjiang Province in China on 5 July
2009, in which up to 200 people died, according to official reports.

2.	Calls on the government to seek assurances from People's
Republic of China that human and political rights are upheld, as under
the Chinese Constitution and international law.
