The Tasmanian Greens today demanded that Telstra reverse its decision to
remove the only public phone box from the Bruny Island community of
Lunawanna.

Greens Leader and Member for Franklin Nick McKim MP said the retention
of public phones is crucial to the sustainability of remote communities,
and that the health and safety of Lunawanna residents, visitors and
tourists is threatened by this removal.

"Telstra has an obligation to provide communications infrastructure to
all Tasmanian communities, not just those that return profits,'" said Mr
McKim.

"The removal of the only phone box at Lunawanna will create a health and
safety hazard in this area where none existed before."

"Telstra may claim that they 'consulted' with the Bruny community before
removing the Lunawanna phone box, but in my opinion pasting a piece of
paper on the side of the box does not constitute proper consultation,
and I demand that Telstra reconsider this decision and give Lunawanna
its public phone back," said Mr McKim.
