"Tell Kevin Rudd to do the job Australians elected him to do": Greens launch national TV campaign

Prime Minister Rudd's CPRS bill “locks in failure” on the climate crisis by setting targets way too low and handing billions of dollars to polluters. That is the key message of a national television advertising campaign launched by the Australian Greens today.

The 30 second message from Greens Leader Bob Brown calls on Australians to visit the Greens MPs website (www.GreensMPs.org.au) and send a message to Prime Minister Rudd that they will not agree to lock in failure.

“Prime Minister Rudd wants you to believe that the only choice is between his bill and no bill at all. That's bunkum,” Australian Greens Leader, Senator Bob Brown, says in the message.

“The Continue Polluting Regardless Scheme locks in failure on the climate crisis,” Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said.

The Greens' move to oppose the CPRS if the Government refuses to toughen it is backed by 3 out of 4 Australian voters, according to a recent Galaxy poll.

“We have consistently offered to work with the Government to toughen up the bill by inserting credible emissions targets and making polluters pay. But Minister Wong and the Prime Minister have refused to budge from their inexcusably weak position,” Senator Milne said.

“We are willing to give ground in negotiations, but we will not give the Earth.

“Mr Rudd's 'it's my CPRS or nothing' approach is a false choice.

“The real choice is whether we do what it takes to stop the climate crisis or whether we lock in failure by sandbagging the old polluting economy instead of driving a real transformation.

“The CPRS will lock in rising emissions until 2012. If we reject that and keep working, we can get truly effective action in place in the time before the CPRS would begin to do anything at all.

“Unless the Greens are there arguing the case for meaningful action, there is no chance this Government will deliver the kind of action we need to protect the climate.”
