30th anniversary of Reclaim the Night March - Lee Rhiannon speaks on the NT intervention 

What: 30th Anniversary of Reclaim the Night March. Speakers and March. Theme: ending the Northern Territory intervention.
When: 6.30pm, Friday 31 October 2008.
Where: Rally starts at Town Hall Square and ends at Victoria Park. Speakers at both Town Hall Square and Victoria Park.

Greens MP and women's spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said:

"Tonight women celebrate 30 years of the Reclaim the Night March," Ms Rhiannon said.

"During these past three decades women have worked hard to reduce violence against women, but the challenge well and truly continues.

"The Northern Territory intervention is morally wrong and cannot be justified. 

"The Greens support repealing the Emergency Response legislation and pursuing community based programs to reduce violence against Indigenous women and children.

"The NT intervention is one of the remnants of Howard's extreme tactics of divide and rule.

"The Howard Government is gone and by now the intervention should be in the dustbin of history.

"Tragically, the Rudd government has breathed life into this discredited paternalistic policy. 

"The starting point for the Labor government's approach to Indigenous Affairs should be respect for human rights and providing resources to empower communities.

"The safety of indigenous women and children cannot be imposed, it must be fostered by working hand in hand with local communities" Ms Rhiannon said.
