The Tasmanian Greens today said that evidence raised before the
Legislative Council Committee Inquiry that following a February meeting
last year between previous Premier Paul Lennon and the then Deputy
Premier Steve Kons, Mr Kons informed his ministerial driver that "the
pulp mill will be approved by the end of May", reveals that there is now
a strong prima facie case that the Parliament was mislead and conned
into passing the fast track Pulp Mill Assessment Act 2007.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP has called for former Premier Paul Lennon
and CEO of Gunns Ltd John Gay to be brought before the Bar of the House
of Assembly to answer questions regarding the sudden withdrawal of the
pulp mill proposal from the RPDC, and the decision by government to
support the fast track Parliamentary approval process.
"David Bartlett claims to be a great democratist, and he claims to have
drawn a line in the sand, but the real test will be whether he helps or
hinders us getting to the truth of this matter."
"There is now even more of a reeking stench emanating from the
Parliamentary approval process for the pulp mill, and we want to expose
the truth of the whole sordid affair."
"The timeline that Mr Kons was apparently told about is clearly shorter
than the time within which the RPDC had indicated it could assess the
pulp mill, so clearly there is a prima facie case that the fast track
Parliamentary assessment process was conceived and agreed to at that
meeting. The government's failure to disclose this to the Parliament
when approving the mill constitute a deliberate misleading of the
House."
"Wanting to expose the truth of the matter clearly makes David Bartlett
feel uncomfortable and defensive, but the public is demanding answers."
"Those who may have been complicit in misleading and conning the
Parliament to be brought before the Bar of the House to answer the many
questions surrounding this matter."
