Period of Reflection Should Begin Parliament - Brown

Greens Senator Bob Brown said that a period of reflection - as
brief as 30 seconds - at the start of each Parliamentary sitting day,
would encourage politicians to consider the privileges and
responsibilities of representing Australians in our national Parliament.

"I endorse new MHR Rob Oakeshott's call for recognition of
country each morning."

"I also note that both Prime Minister Rudd and Opposition Leader
Turnbull oppose the Speaker's idea of reviewing the Lord's Prayer being
recited each morning."

"When I first sought a review of the prayers in 1997 it went
nowhere fast."

"However, after the reading of the Lord's Prayer - which many
members of the Senate do not recite - why not proceed to a period of
reflection in which members of Parliament can quietly consider our
responsibly in all we do to present and future generations?"
