The Tasmanian Greens today accused Premier David Bartlett of running for
cover over the crisis caused by his decision to recommend Mr Richard
McCreadie for appointment as temporary Police Commissioner.

Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that many issues remained unresolved,
including why Mr Bartlett decided to recommend Mr McCreadie as Police
Commissioner, and the exact nature of the close and current links
between Mr Bartlett, Mr McCreadie and Mr Johnston.

"The Premier can duck and weave all he likes, but serious questions
remain unanswered and rather than keeping Tasmania in the dark he should
be allowing the disinfectant of sunlight to shine on the murky inner
workings of his government."

"It's just not good enough for Mr Bartlett to say 'trust me,
everything's OK' when this government has such a reputation for secrecy
and cronyism."

"The community remains completely in the dark about the events leading
up to this crisis, and that should be unacceptable to a Premier who has
staked his reputation on improving the community's confidence in
governance in Tasmania.'

"There is still indisputably a need for an independent inquiry to get to
the bottom of the mess in which we find ourselves due to Mr Bartlett's
behind closed doors bungling."

Mr McKim said that the entire issue has exposed Premier David Bartlett
as having failed in his stated intent to improve governance standards in
Tasmania.

"So much for the new broom, and so much for the line in the sand; David
Bartlett stands accused as being just as poor on governance issues as
his predecessor. And that's really saying something."
