The Tasmanian Greens today threw their support behind the agreement on
improved wages and conditions for Disability Services workers that has
been struck between National Disability Services (NDS) and the Health
and Community Services Union (HACSU), describing it as a long time
coming.
Greens Shadow Health spokesperson Cassy O'Connor MP said that the
Bartlett government, which is responsible for funding non government not
for profit services, must now come to the party and ensure that the
wages increase does occur as Tasmanian Disability workers are the lowest
paid across the nation.
"The Greens warmly welcome this breakthrough deal struck by the Union
and National Disability Services, and we urge the government to commit
to ensuring that these improved wage and conditions for Disability
Services workers employed across the not for profit sector do
materialise as a matter of urgency," Ms O'Connor said.
"Tasmanian Disability Services workers have been under-valued,
under-paid and over-worked for far too long, which has resulted in
increasing stress on individuals and across this crucially important
sector."
"Funding these wage increases would be a prudent investment by the
Bartlett government in attracting and retaining Disability workers now
and into the future."
