Future of Regional NRM bodies remains uncertain
Wednesday 22nd October 2008
The Australian Greens said today they remain very concerned about the
future of regional Natural Resource Management (NRM) organisations and
that of NRM in Australia.
"While the Government has moved to dampen down anger and frustration
from regional NRM groups this year by committing to 60% of historic
funding and some transmission funding for this financial year, the real
impact will be felt next year when funding cuts take effect," said
Senator Rachel Siewert.
"Individual NRM groups are not guaranteed 60% of historic funding for
the following years, the overall funding allocation to regional groups
is 60% but not to individual groups. This may have a devastating impact
on regional groups. Staff cuts and losses are already happening in some
regions and this will get worst next year."
"The Government has not adequately explained their vision for delivering
NRM in this country, they are undermining NRM groups and their ability
to deliver but have no adequate plan for alternative delivery methods,"
she concluded.
