Greens MLC Colleen Hartland has congratulated the Government on finally
moving forward with the Footscray train station overpass, but fears it has
been delayed for political purposes.
"The government announced the project during the last weeks of the 2006
state election."
"After that there was complete radio silence on the issue, including an
inability by the Planning Minister to answer my questions in parliament
about it."
"Now during the final weeks of the local council election campaign, we get
a glossy announcement of the design being completed, complete with three
photos of ALP representatives."
"I’m looking into my crystal ball, and I can see a vision of the walkway
being completed just before the next state election, in an extremely
marginal upper house seat."
"I use Footscray station regularly, and I've watched that walkway go from
bad to worse over the last twenty years. I was there this morning. The
walkway is a public hazard. The ancient wood is rotting under the
bitumen, and it's held together by rusting metal and peeling paint."**
"Good on them for finally announcing a new walkway that people with
disabilities can use, but please don't treat this as a political football.
Two years from the announcement to the tender process is way too long.
Public safety is too important to be treated as a political issue. It
should be something we all agree on."
