ACT GREENS MLA DEB FOSKEY MEDIA RELEASE
---------------------------

17 Oct 08

Election Eve

Greens MLA Deb Foskey today said that the word on the streets and
comments from constituents gives her confidence that there will be more
Greens than ever before in the seventh Assembly.

"I am confident that the next Assembly will be strengthened by a strong
Greens crossbench and this will mean better scrutiny of government and
stronger action for the environment and social sustainability" Dr Foskey
said today.

"Four years of majority government have proved to be too much for many
Canberra residents. Only stuck-on Labor voters will be putting Labor
first while the Liberals' shenanigans over the last four years appear to
have ruled them out as a viable alternative government in their own
right."

"More voters than ever before realise that only the Greens are prepared
to stand up for Canberra's environment and its most vulnerable
citizens."

"As one Green on the cross-bench with majority government I couldn't win
all the time - although even from this position, some gains for the
environment and social justice were made."

"Preventing the eviction of two hundred residents of the Narrabundah
Long Stay Park began when I stood up for them in the Assembly and
pushing hard on climate change, waste and public transport has made a
difference."

"I am handing on the baton to a team of people who have shown in the
campaign that they can work well together, and made it clear that while
prepared to work with whoever is in government, they will not forsake
the Greens agenda."

"We all know the next four years will be crucial for the future of our
world and the Greens believe that Canberra could lead the way with more
action for social and ecological sustainability than either major party
has the understanding or courage to implement."

"As for me, I will spend my last night as MLA with St Vincent de Paul on
its night patrol, looking out for those people who appear to have been
forgotten by Labor and Liberal in this election - the people still on
the streets when the rest of us are tucked up in bed" Dr Foskey said.
