Murray-Darling mayor takes the fight to Canberra
WHAT: Alexandrina Mayor Kym McHugh, Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young
and Senator Nick Xenophon holding a joint press conference
WHEN: 12.45pm TODAY
WHERE: Senate Courtyard, Parliament House, CANBERRA
Alexandrina Council Mayor Kym McHugh has travelled to Canberra to fight
for a better deal for the lower lakes and Coorong.
Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young and Independent Senator Nick Xenophon
will join the mayor as he lobbies senior politicians on both sides of
politics for real action and a national takeover of the Murray-Darling
system to ensure a fairer deal for his region.
"When the Government waves the white flag on the lower lakes, it's Kym's
community that pays the price," said Senator Hanson-Young.
"This issue needs to be above politics," Nick said. "We need one river
system with one set of rules to ensure a fair share of water for the
environment and farmers up and down the river."
Mayor McHugh will join Senator Hanson-Young and Senator Xenophon for a
joint media conference in the Senate Courtyard at 12.45pm today.
