Costa must turn off Starbucks' taps
Media Release: 8 October 2008
The Starbucks coffee chain's policy of leaving a tap constantly running
in all of its stores is the height of irresponsibility, according to
Greens NSW MP John Kaye.
Dr Kaye said: "NSW Water Minister Phil Costa should step in and
immediately enforce the ban on unattended water taps being left on.
"Starbuck's use of the constantly running 'dipper well' tap is a slap
in the face to Sydney households, who have reduced their water use by
over 20% in the past eight years.
"Water is a scarce resource and big corporate entities like Starbucks
should be taking the lead on reducing use at every opportunity, not
hiding behind the false excuse that they need to keep the tap running to
keep utensils hygienic.
"Thousands of other cafés across Australia manage to maintain high
standards of hygiene without wasting water.
"Starbucks should be made to immediately cease this irresponsible
practise," Dr Kaye said.
