Greens MLC Colleen Hartland has spoken in support of the government's
Abortion Law Reform Bill in Parliament today.
Ms Hartland commenced her speech with a tacit acknowledgement of
cross-party support of pro choice MPs, by repeating the historic words
used in Federal Parliament by former Democrats Senator Lyn Allison: "An
estimated one in three women in Australia have an abortion. I am one of
them".
She dedicated her speech to women who have died or been maimed by illegal
backyard abortions.
"We have legislators like you and me deciding whether a woman should have
an abortion, a single male Supreme Court Judge deciding whether a woman
can have an abortion, and a doctor deciding whether a woman can have an
abortion. What do all these people have in common? None of them are the
actual woman who wants an abortion."
"It is my view that that the woman having the abortion should be the one
who makes the choice."
