Tough Competition for Annual “Toaster” Awards For Bad Developers

Nominations are flooding in for the 2008 annual Bad Developer Awards.
The Awards, known as “the Toasters” after the controversial East
Circular Quay development, allow individuals and community groups to
nominate the worst property developments and developers in the past
year.

Not surprisingly the Wollongong area has dominated nominations this
year with nominations for worst developer, worst development and worst
council.

There have been nominations already for both Sydney and regional
developments.

Sydney nominees include the V8 car races at Olympic Park and the
proposed residential developments at Currawong, Balmain Tigers and the
UTS site at Lindfield.

Regional nominees include the massive residential sub-divisions
approved for the north and south coasts at Catherine Hill Bay and Sandon
Point.

“These awards are an opportunity to highlight the worst new
developments in Sydney and around NSW,” said the Toasters’ founder
and host, NSW Greens MP Sylvia Hale.

“They are an opportunity to hit back at the developers who are
destroying our environment, heritage and local amenity and give them the
public razzing they deserve,” said Ms Hale.

The awards also provide an opportunity to celebrate good developments.
Those who work to stop bad developments will also be recognised with a
“best community campaign” award.

The awards will be announced at a deliberately down-market evening
ceremony in the utilitarian surrounds of the Teachers Club in Surry
Hills. The ceremony will take place on Thursday 9 October, 2008 at 6:30
pm.

“Unlike Liberal and Labor Party corporate fundraising events, the
“Toasters” are not funded by developer donations. Admission and
food is free, drinks are at club prices and there will be no fundraising
activities, so anyone can come along and join in the fun,” said Ms
Hale.

Information about how to nominate or attending the awards event can be
found at www.sylviahale.org.au. Nominations close Tuesday 7 October
2008.
