The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed the release of the Parsons
Brinckerhoff Tasmanian Government Greenhouse Gas Emissions Audit but
criticised the Audit's failure to include Forestry Tasmania.

Greens Leader and Shadow Climate Change spokesperson Nick McKim MP said
that the forest industry is a massive emitter of greenhouse gases and
its exemption from the Audit calls into questions its results.

"The decision to exempt Forestry Tasmania from this Audit is a massive
cop-out, and it is high time that the industry is held account for its
contribution to climate change," Mr McKim said.

"The quickest and easiest way to reduce Tasmania's emissions would be to
protect our high conservation value old-growth forests from
deforestation and degradation; the ball is now in David Bartlett's
court."

"The latest science from the Australian National University (ANU) makes
it clear that unlogged forests store far more carbon than is previously
thought, and recommends their protection as carbon sinks."

Mr McKim also said that instead of the Premier holding to his view that
logging does not contribute to climate change as he has said previously,
Mr Bartlett should get hold of the latest carbon science to inform
properly his decisions and comments.
