The Tasmanian Greens today said that the Premier and Education Minister,
David Bartlett, should guarantee that the Levendale School will remain
open for the 2009 school year, following the Premier's brief visit to
the school today during which he still failed to provide the community
clear answers regarding the school's future.

Greens Member for Lyons, Tim Morris MP, said that it is appalling that
so late in the year Premier Bartlett was still unable, or unwilling, to
provide either a 'yes' or 'no' answer to the community.

Mr Morris also said that it is his understanding that Premier Bartlett
provided community representatives with a social impact study to which
they have been requested to comment, which may impact upon any decision
about the school's future.

"Despite the Premier making a short visit to the Levendale community
today, the best that Mr Bartlett could do was to state that he may allow
the school to say open until the end of Term 1 next year," Mr Morris
said.

"Mr Bartlett fails to understand that unless he provides some certainty
for the 2009 school year then it is difficult to attract any new
students to the school."

"I call on Mr Bartlett to guarantee that the Levendale school will stay
open in 2009 providing the community commits to making sure that
student numbers rise to at least 15 by the end of the year, should the
community expect the school to continue beyond 2009."

"Not knowing the school's future is a cruel punishment for the Labor
government to deal out upon the drought affected community in the
Levendale area."

"The Greens will continue to work with the Levendale community to do
everything possible to keep the school open," Mr Morris said.
