Garrett should bury Traveston Dam
Wyaralong approval clause 'absurd' - Brown
Now that Queensland's Premier Anna Bligh has delayed the contentious
Traveston Dam on the Mary River north of Brisbane, the Federal
Government should bury it, Greens Leader Bob Brown said in Canberra
today.
"The national significance of the endangered species the dam would push
towards extinction, and of the rich food-producing farmland which would
be flooded, makes this dam a stinker."
"The Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett has ample information
and power to stop the destructive project and put everyone - including
the Queensland government - out of the misery the dam is causing."
"The very active local community and the Greens in Queensland, including
new Greens MP Ronan Lee, deserve a large measure of credit for making
the Queensland government rethink its approach to Traveston Dam."
"However Minister Garrett's approval of the Wyaralong Dam on the Logan
River is environmentally unsupportable and has the absurd requirement of
'extensive monitoring of the downstream environment to ensure that the
operation of the dam does not impact on the Moreton Bay wetlands.'
Monitoring stops nothing," Senator Brown said.
