Greens propose new "millionaires' tax"
The Greens will push for a new millionaires' tax when the Federal
Government's financial rescue package comes before the Senate today.
Australian Greens Leader Senator Bob Brown said the Greens would be
moving to amend the Social Security and Other Legislation Amendment
(Economic Security Strategy) Bill 2008 to create a new tax bracket of 50
cents in the dollar for that portion of income above one million
dollars.
"In 2005/06 there were 5605 millionaires earning collectively $10.7
billion."
"Creating a new tax bracket once incomes pass one million dollars would
deliver an estimated $250m extra for the government to go towards
creating green collar jobs and the green economy."
"Australians would like to see extremely wealthy people contribute more
in the current financial crisis."
"Millionaires have enjoyed the fruits of the good times, and must pull
their weight in the tough times."
Senator Brown said that in particular, the exorbitant salaries being
commanded by some of Australia's CEOs should provide a greater return to
the tax office.
