The Tasmanian Greens today said that given the potential magnitude of
the impacts of the global economic crisis on government revenues and
expenditure the state government should deliver a mini-budget early next
year, including any revisions to its fiscal strategy.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that Tasmanians deserve the utmost
transparency from their government around exactly how it would respond
to the significant drop in revenue.
"Tasmanians need to be reassured that the government is taking the
financial crisis seriously, and the best way for this to be delivered is
by the mechanism of a mini-budget."
"There will undoubtedly be a significant drop in government revenue due
to the financial crisis, and the government must inform the Tasmanian
taxpayers exactly what the resultant impact on its spending will be."
"Once we have had a look at the mid-year financial report due on
December 15, the government should use those figures to underpin a
mini-budget to outline in detail the impacts on revenue and the areas in
which spending will need to be cut."
