The Tasmanian Greens today accused Premier David Bartlett of
deliberately avoiding Parliamentary scrutiny after it was revealed that
he is missing two Parliamentary Question Times this week in order to
attend a one-day Ministerial Conference in Darwin on Thursday.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that as of 11.30am today there were
still seats available on a flight leaving Tasmania at 1.40pm tomorrow
that would allow the Premier to attend Question Time and still get him
to Darwin in plenty of time for a good night's sleep prior to attending
Thursday's meeting.
"There is no excuse for Mr Bartlett not to front up tomorrow and make
himself accountable to the Tasmanian community by facing the difficult
questions."
"The Premier could attend Question Time tomorrow and still make it to
Darwin in time for his beauty sleep. The fact that he is not prepared to
do so demonstrates contempt for the Tasmanian community and the
Parliamentary process."
"If Mr Bartlett is serious about providing Opposition parties with the
opportunity to scrutinise his government he could start by attending
Question Time tomorrow instead of deliberately avoiding the scrutiny he
knows he will face."
Mr McKim said that the Greens want Mr Bartlett to attend Question Time
tomorrow to face questions on issues of process around his decision to
appoint Mr McCreadie as Police Commissioner, his ignorance of the latest
science on the carbon value of mature forests, his failure to hold to
his 'line in the sand' on the pulp mill, and the lengthy elective
surgery and public housing waiting lists.
"The only reason for Mr Bartlett not to attend Question Time tomorrow is
to dodge the hard questions he knows he will be facing on a range of
serious issues."
