National rental affordability scheme faces uncertain future
The Australian Greens have warned that the government's National Rental
Affordability Scheme (NRAS) has been put at risk by adverse rulings from
the Australian Tax Office.
The ATO has warned charities may lose their tax exempt status if they
choose to participate in the NRAS.
A Senate Committee has heard that many community organisations would not
participate if their tax exempt status was revoked, potentially
compromising the viability of the scheme.
The Australian Greens Housing Spokesperson, Senator Scott Ludlam said he
is concerned about the effectiveness of the plan:
"After hearing yesterday's evidence, I'm very concerned about the
viability of the scheme. We have an untenable situation whereby the
community sector could be frozen out of the NRAS. That's not a good
outcome as the sector is well placed to provide affordable housing
options, and the Government clearly intended for them to participate in
this scheme," said Senator Ludlam.
"The government could provide clarity to applicants if the Treasurer
issues a statement of intent, indicating the government will take action
to resolve this. We've written to the Treasurer requesting this but have
not received a response. With this bill due to come into the Senate in
the coming week, the clock is ticking."
"Everyone supports increased housing affordability, but the
participation of the community sector is integral to the realisation of
that objective. We look forward to this matter being resolved as soon as
possible," concluded Senator Ludlam.
