The Tasmanian Greens today confirmed in-principle support for a package
to assist forestry contractors to leave the industry with dignity and
said that such a package should be linked to the protection of high
conservation value forests.

Greens Opposition Leader Nick McKim MP said that the Greens do not
support yet another untargetted assistance package which would simply
entrench business as usual as suggested by the CFMEU.

Greens Member for Franklin, Nick McKim MP, also blamed state and federal
governments for the ongoing pain and difficulty experienced by forestry
contractors and said that many contractors deserved assistance to leave
the industry with dignity and to re-skill in other areas.

"The Greens are proposing that an assistance package is developed to
provide forest contractors with the ability to leave the industry with
dignity, and offers re-skilling opportunities," Mr McKim said.

"Forest contractors do need targetted help to reduce the massive
personal and financial pressure that they have been forced to experience
for far too long."

"However, we are not suggesting yet another untargetted industry
assistance package which would just see unsustainable forestry practices
continue as business as usual."
