The Tasmanian Greens today supported the offer from environmental groups
of a moratorium on protest action in the Styx, Florentine and Weld
forests pending an independently mediated dialogue, describing it as a
chance for a major step towards an end to the decades-long forest
dispute in Tasmania.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that the current conflict in Tasmania's
forests is the biggest leadership test faced by Mr Bartlett since he
became Premier, but that to be a part of the solution he will have to
get personally involved.
"Mr Bartlett needs to realise that he has a chance to show that he is
the kind of leader for which Tasmania has been crying out for so long -
this is his historic opportunity and he should be grabbing it with both
hands," Mr McKim said.
"The Premier needs to get personally involved rather than allowing his
Minister David Llewellyn to persist with unhelpful and divisive
rhetoric."
"Healing harmful community divisions should be the highest priority for
any leader, and there is still a chance for Mr Bartlett to rise to the
challenge that history has presented him with today."
Mr McKim, who indicated his willingness to be involved in any capacity,
issued a personal plea to Mr Bartlett to participate in the
independently mediated discussions proposed by environmental groups
yesterday.
"If it would help I would love to be involved, but for this process to
have the chance to succeed that it deserves, it will need the Premier on
board and committed to participating in good faith."
"The community is crying out for leadership, and Mr Bartlett cannot
allow the call to go unanswered as he has to date."
