Labor must start judicial inquiry into Haneef

18.02.2008

"Statements from the AFP Commissioner Mr Mick Keelty in Senate Estimates
hearings today show that the AFP has learnt nothing from the Haneef
affair," Senator Nettle said today.

"There is clearly an urgent need for a full judicial inquiry into the
national security operations of the AFP and the Haneef case."

"Mr Keelty said that there have been no changes put in place as a result
of the Haneef debacle."

"Mr Keelty also confirmed that there was communication from the AFP to
the immigration department about using immigration detention to prevent
Dr Haneef from being released."

"The Greens shared concerns at the time that the AFP and immigration
officials were collaborating to hold Dr Haneef in custody. Commissioner
Keelty has confirmed today that that was the case."

"Mr Keelty again criticised media outlets reporting of the matter. It
seems the Commissioner has learnt little from this saga apart from a
desire to shut down media scrutiny."

"Despite the more than 600 personal involved in the Haneef
investigation, it was media attention that finally brought the pursuit
of this innocent man to end."

"The government spent more than 7.5 million on this bungled Haneef
operation, the public needs to know what went wrong."

"Labor needs to hold a full judicial inquiry into the Haneef affair."
