Rudd should scrap inflationary tax cuts - Greens
Greens Leader Bob Brown today said Prime Minister Kevin Rudd should
scrap the inflationary $31 billion tax cuts.
"Just three days ago the Reserve Bank warned that tax cuts would
accelerate the consumer spending it is trying to slow," Senator Brown
said.
"The $31 billion tax cuts will put pressure on inflation, making another
interest rate rise more certain. Mr Rudd should survey Australian public
opinion to see if Australians want these inflationary tax cuts or if
they would prefer the money be invested in education, health and
tackling climate change," Senator Brown said.
"At the very least Mr Rudd's could ask the 2020 ideas summit to consider
the wisdom of the tax cuts or how they might better be spent."
"The Greens oppose the tax cuts. Instead the money should be used to
retrofit Australia's 7.4 million homes for greater energy efficiency,"
Senator Brown said.
