Government needs less talk, more action on whaling
Thursday 14th February 2008
The Australian Greens today once again called on the Government to take
legal action over whaling in Australian Antarctic waters.
"After talking up their response, the new Labor Government have done
little more than the previous Howard government to tackle the whale
slaughter," said Greens spokesperson Senator Rachel Siewert.
"The Senate today passed my motion urging the Government to immediately
commence legal action to stop the slaughter of our whale population. We
look forward to an immediate commencement of real action by this
Government."
"There is a wealth of international legal advice already available that
shows there are a number of fruitful legal avenues to pursue. While the
government continue 'giving serious consideration' to legal action more
whales will be killed."
"The Japanese whaling fleet are still in our Antarctic waters and whales
are still dying painfully and unnecessarily," she concluded.
