“Sorry” is long overdue
Ian Cohen, Aboriginal Affairs Spokesperson for The Greens in the New
South Wales Parliament, said today “The Prime Minister’s
announcement of a formal apology to the Stolen Generations marks the
start of a generational change in admitting to the moral
responsibilities of the Australian Government”.
“I hope this moves the New South Wales Government to be more
proactive in the Stolen Wages issue”, said Mr Cohen.
“Reasonable expectations of indigenous people who have had their
wages stolen over generations have not been fulfilled by the New South
Wales Government.”
“The regressive policies of former governments have caused
considerable physical and mental hardship to indigenous people, and an
unnecessary delay in the reconciliation process.”
Mr Cohen is joined enthusiastically in his comments by the other NSW
Greens MPs, Lee Rhiannon, Sylvia Hale and John Kaye who hope that this
is beginning of the path to complete reconciliation and significant
progress in dealing with aboriginal health and social issues. NSW Greens
support Senator Bob Brown’s call for proper and appropriate
compensation.
“On behalf of The Greens NSW I wholeheartedly join the Nation’s
politicians in saying sorry to the stolen generations,” said Mr
Cohen.
