Compensation should follow apology: Brown

Greens Leader Bob Brown will give notice of the following motion in the
Senate today. The motion will be moved and voted on tomorrow morning.

The motion reads that:

The Senate calls on the Government to provide speedy and
just compensation to the Stolen Generations

"Reparations must follow the apology," Senator Brown said.

"The fact that Mr Rudd has said no to compensation doesn't mean that
that will be the final outcome. Mr Rudd must look beyond what is
politically good or bad and do the right thing."

The Tasmanian government, Opposition and Greens have agreed to support
to pay $5 million in reparations for past wrongs.

"Indigenous people should be invited onto the floor of the parliament to
hear this apology and to respond," Senator Brown said,

"If it's good enough for George Bush to be brought onto the floor of the
parliament, why not our first Australians - they have a far greater
claim," Senator Brown said.
