ACT GREENS MLA DEB FOSKEY MEDIA RELEASE
---------------------------

7 Feb 08

School of Music

ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey today called for a high level round table to
solve the problems facing the School of Music and Canberra Symphony
Orchestra (CSO).

"Folding Canberra's School of Music into the ANU hasn't been an entirely
good thing" Dr Foskey said today.

"Changes to the university funding formula then made things worse".

"Now it looks as if Canberra's music school and symphony orchestra are
at risk."

"Canberra people are great music lovers and the CSO's concerts are very
popular."

"The School of Music provides our young people with the opportunity to
pursue their talents without leaving town, and music students themselves
provide tuition to school children in a variety of instruments."

"Thus we don't just lose a music school and an orchestra, we lose music
throughout our community and the opportunity to develop musicians of the
future."

"ANU Vice Chancellor Chubb's reported comments don't appear to leave
the door open for creative solutions. This is cause for real concern."

"The ACT and Commonwealth governments should get together with the major
players and work out how to strengthen both the orchestra and school."

"It is not good enough to simply say the numbers don't add up for the
ANU" Dr Foskey said.
