Rudd should scrap tax cuts - Brown
Greens Leader Senator Bob Brown today called on Prime Minister Kevin
Rudd to scrap the planned $30 billion tax cuts, following the Reserve
Bank's decision to raise interest rates.
"It would be irresponsible of the Rudd government to persist with the
$30 billion in tax cuts in light of today's Reserve Bank decision to
raise interest rates due to 'significant inflation pressures'," Senator
Brown said.
"Injecting money in the form of tax cuts into an overheated economy
causes inflationary pressure. That money should go into capacity
building infrastructure and services such as health, education and
public transport instead of tax cuts - or into superannuation, as
recommended by the AWU."
"Restraint is needed to keep inflation and interest rates low, and to
prepare Australia for tougher times ahead," Senator Brown said.
