Release details of Port Stanvac clean-up now: Greens
Greens MLC Mark Parnell has called on the State Government to
immediately release details of the clean-up of the Port Stanvac site, in
response to the announcement that the Government has purchased a section
of the land to build its desalination plant.
Under the agreement between the Government and ExxonMobil signed in July
2006, the company was required to provide a progress report every six
months to an Independent Site Environmental Auditor and the
Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
The Department of Premier and Cabinet has refused to release to Greens
MLC Mark Parnell the reports completed so far on the grounds that it
'could have an adverse effect on the business affairs of the third
party'.
"For months I have been trying to get the Government to release under
Freedom of Information the Port Stanvac clean-up reports they were
publicly spruiking just two years ago," Mr Parnell said.
"The Government had put itself in a hopelessly weak bargaining position:
desperate to purchase the land, but also wanting a decent clean up of
the site.
"Now that they have announced a partial acquisition of the site big
questions remain about the deal that has been done.
"ExxonMobil has continued to rack up record annual profits over the last
few years. There is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for them to skimp
on a decent cleanup.
"The Government needs to come straight with the SA public: Is the
pollution worse than we thought, or has the company made little or no
progress on their clean up?
"Either way, the public has a right to know, especially if a third of
Adelaide's water is set to be manufactured on this land," he said.
