The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed Education Minister and Premier David
Bartlett's announcement that the Levendale Primary School will remain
open for at least the first school term of 2009, but called on the
Premier to commit to the School over the long-term instead of
continually granting short-term stays of execution.
Greens Member for Lyons, Tim Morris MP, said that the Levendale
Community Group has worked hard to raise School enrolment numbers above
the level required by Premier Bartlett, but the Premier's failure to
announce a future for the School past May 2009 is sentencing the
community to yet more uncertainty, and ensuring that the future of their
School becomes a state election issue.
Mr Morris also accused the Bartlett Government and the Education
Department of handballing their responsibility for the School's future
onto the local community, and called for funding allocations to be made
to the Levendale Community Group to assist in its efforts to raise
School enrolment numbers.
"While the Greens welcome Premier Bartlett's decision to grant a
lifeline to the Levendale School, the decision still fails to give the
permanency that parents require to enrol their children with
confidence," said Mr Morris.
"Premier Bartlett has failed to give Levendale any certainty about the
future of their School and he now needs to be aware that the Tasmanian
Greens are more than prepared to take the fight for Levendale Primary to
the next state election."
"The Levendale Community Group has been left to shoulder all
responsibility for the School's future, and I am also calling on the
Premier and Education Department to actively assist the Community Group
by allocating funding and giving any other assistance that the Community
Group requires in its quest to increase School enrolments," said Mr
Morris.
