Greens announce candidate for Frome by-election
The Greens are delighted to announce Joy O'Brien as their candidate for
the Frome by-election on January 17th.
Joy is a former University Reference Librarian who is an active and
passionate mid-North resident. Ms O'Brien also has significant
experience of local government, as a former councillor on the Burnside
Council.
"With the Rudd Labor Government dropping the ball on climate change, and
the Rann Government scrapping vital country education and health
services, now more than ever the people of Frome need a strong
independent voice," said Ms O'Brien.
"As someone with long experience in the tertiary education sector, I am
deeply concerned about the cutbacks to TAFE services at Clare and Port
Pirie, in particular the vital Womens' Education Program that helps
provide women critical skills and confidence to re-enter the workforce.
"Our rural communities need a well-funded and vibrant country health
plan. We must re-establish services to ensure that we have the care we
need.
"I also strongly believe rural communities like ours need support in
adjusting to climate change. The State Government should play a leading
role in helping farmers to deal with climate change and adapt practices
for a drier and warmer climate," she said.
Introducing Joy as the Greens candidate, SA Greens MLC Mark Parnell
described her as a passionate and committed mid-North resident.
"Joy would make a fantastic local member. She has a genuine love of
life and great experience in local government and the education sector,"
Mr Parnell said.
"The recent Mayo by-election where we scored 22% of the primary vote,
and 47% of the two-party preferred vote, shows there is strong support
for the Greens in regional SA.
"Greens' preferences could very well decide this election," he said.
