Rees govt must invest in green jobs for Illawarra
Media release: 10 December 2008
As the economic downturn begins to slash steel jobs, the Greens are
calling on the Rees government to invest in renewable energy
manufacturing in the Illawarra.
Greens NSW MP John Kaye said: "The global financial crisis has thrown
the steel industry into crisis.
"The Illawarra is particularly vulnerable.
"Premier Rees cannot abandon the thousands of households that depend on
BlueScope’s Port Kembla plant for their livelihoods.
"Now is the time to kick start a renewable energy boom in the Illawarra
by putting state money into manufacturing plants and setting a renewable
energy target.
"Professor Bill Mitchell from the University of Newcastle estimated
that 73,000 jobs could be created across NSW if the Rees government
moved to a low carbon economy.
"Building a wind and solar industry in Wollongong would not only ease
the pressure on the region’s economy.
"It would provide a solid foundation for a sustainable manufacturing
industry for decades to come.
"As the global recession bites harder, the Illawarra will be in the
direct line of fire unless the Premier Rees acts quickly to build the
new low carbon economy and put the region in the forefront of the jobs
boom," Dr Kaye said.
