Call for Government not to proclaim Shooters Party Amendment

The National Coalition for Gun Control and The Greens are calling on
the Government not to proclaim an amendment to the Crimes (Domestic and
Personal Violence) Act 2007 that will place firearms back into the hands
of those who have been subject to a domestic violence order.

The law at present automatically revokes a person’s firearm licence
when they are subject to an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO), and
prevents them from reapplying for a new firearms licence for a 10-year
period.

This amendment will erode the current law by allowing a person to apply
to the courts to have the AVO revoked and the firearm licence
reinstated.

Samantha Lee, Chair of the National Coalition for Gun Control states,
“The objectives of the Crimes (Domestic and Personal Violence) Act
2007 is to “ensure the safety and protection of all persons, including
children, who experience or witness domestic violence” (s.9). This
amendment offends the objectives of the Act and should not be
proclaimed.”

Greens MP Lee Rhiannon stated "The threat to the safety of women and
children is heightened by this dangerous amendment. Premier Nathan Rees
could redeem his government by ensuring that this part of the domestic
violence law never takes affect."
