Gillard must reveal ABC Learning plan: Senate

The Senate has demanded that Education Minister Julia Gillard reveal her
plan for 386 ABC Learning Centres facing possible closure in 2009.

Today the Senate supported a motion calling on the Education Minister to
immediately table the Federal Government's contingency plan for ABC
Learning beyond December 31, when its $22 million prop-up of the centres
expires.

"There are only two days left for Minister Gillard to face questions
from the Parliament before it shuts up shop for the summer break," she
said.

"With only twelve working days remaining before many centres close their
doors for Christmas, it's time for answers.

"Parents and workers deserve to know what 2009 holds for their work and
family arrangements, rather than being left to worry as they do their
Christmas shopping."

Senator Hanson-Young said it had taken far too long for families and
workers to be provided with relevant information.

"Time and time again, what I am hearing from those in the childcare
sector is the complaint of a lack of communication and transparency from
the Government on this issue," she said.

"Back on October 22 I asked questions of the Department in Senate
Estimates as to whether or not the Government had a contingency plan in
the event that ABC Learning collapsed.

"Despite being assured that such a plan was in the works,
parliamentarians and parents alike are still waiting to hear what it
entails.

"It is just not good enough that those who will be affected by any
childcare centre closures are still waiting for answers as December 31
fast approaches.

"Minister Gillard must front up on the future of ABC Learning before
Parliament rises for 2008."
