Bill of Rights needs to also guarantee grandkids' rights
The Rudd government's consultations on a Bill of Rights
should extend to include the right of our grandchildren to a clean,
green and ecologically secure nation, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown
said today.
"Our children and theirs have intergenerational rights
to inherit, no less than us, clean water, an unpolluted atmosphere,
uncontaminated soil and intact biodiversity. There should be penalties
against knowingly infringing these rights," Senator Brown said.
"The current threat of climate change will leave the
Great Barrier Reef largely dead by 2050 and so deprive future
Australians of a fundamental right which we, today, all enjoy. Actions
which obviously threaten the Tasmanian wedge tailed eagle, the blue
whale or the koala with extinction should be ruled out by a bill with
teeth," Senator Brown said.
