Rees must respond to federal inaction with junk food ad ban

Media release: 3 December 2008

The Rees government should move quickly to protect kids after the Rudd government and the Coalition united to defeat Federal Greens legislation to ban junk food advertising on children's TV, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.

Dr Kaye said: "The Rudd government has buckled to political pressure from the advertising and food industries. It has been left to the premiers to use their constitutional powers to ban junk food commercials on a state-by-state basis.

"NSW Premier Nathan Rees must use his constitutional powers to ban TV advertising of unhealthy foods during children's peak times.

"The state's children will be left to the mercy of junk food industry self regulation unless Premier Rees acts," Dr Kaye said
