The Tasmanian Greens today called for the state and federal governments
to deliver increased funding into researching the causes of whale
strandings.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that due to the regularity of whale
strandings in Tasmania, and our existing expertise in research and
response, we are ideally placed to take a global leadership role.
"Tasmania is a global hotspot for whale strandings, and while we are
world leaders in responding to such events we also need to show global
leadership by allocating more resources into understanding the causes of
these terrible events."
"There is evidence that human activities such as resource exploration
and naval activities may be the cause of many whale strandings, and we
need further targeted research to better understand cause and effect,"
Mr McKim said.
