Brett Dean congratulated: Government must reverse ANAM decision
Canberra, Monday 1 December 2008
The award of the world's most prestigious composition prize to Brett
Dean today is yet another reason why the Rudd Government must reverse
its decision to close the Australian National Academy of Music, the
institution he heads, the Australian Greens said today.
The Greens are calling on Prime Minister Rudd to intervene immediately
and, at the very least, impose a 12 month moratorium on the closure of
the school, so that its future can be properly planned without
disadvantaging students and staff.
"Brett Dean personally has today been recognised by the global musical
community by being awarded such a prestigious award," said Australian
Greens Deputy Leader and Arts Spokesperson, Senator Christine Milne.
"Having been privileged to attend the Academy's concert last Friday
night, and heard the expressions of support from so many around the
world, it is safe to say that the institution Brett heads is similarly
admired.
"Peter Garrett's appropriation of the Academy's name for his new,
supposedly 'better alternative' demonstrates the nonsense of the
decision to close the institution.
"It is vital that Prime Minister Rudd intervene immediately and impose a
12 month moratorium on the closure of the Academy so that the students
and staff can keep up their amazing work while the future of the school
can be discussed."
Tomorrow, Senator Milne, with the support of the Liberals, will move a
motion calling on the Government to impose such a moratorium.
Senator Milne will also be hosting Brett Dean in Canberra tomorrow.
