The Tasmanian Greens today said that Labor MP Lisa Singh's failure to request a conscience vote on the Greens' Pulp Mill Assessment Repeal Bill confirms that she is intending to throw her support behind the pulp mill.
Greens Opposition Leader Nick McKim MP said he asked Premier David Bartlett today if any Member of the Parliamentary ALP had requested a conscience vote or the right to abstain from the vote, on the Greens' Pulp Mill Assessment Repeal Bill 2008, and the Premier revealed that no ALP Member has made such a request.
"Ms Singh has effectively admitted that her decision to abstain from the vote on the pulp mill permit last year was based not on principles, but on a cynical grab for publicity and votes."
"Ms Singh rose like a soufflé last year, but has betrayed all those people who believed she was standing up for them when she abstained from last years' vote by collapsing as soon as the oven door was opened."
"In light of the Premier's answer, it now appears that Lisa Singh is set to go ahead and vote against the Greens' Pulp Mill Assessment Repeal Bill, exposing her abstention on the vote on the pulp mill permit in August last year as a cynical move to confuse voters about her true position on the mill."
Mr McKim also said that given previous Premier Paul Lennon's preparedness to grant Ms Singh a conscience vote, Premier David Bartlett, the self-described 'democratist,' should pro-actively offer all ALP members a conscience vote.
"Mr Bartlett is proving that he is not even half the 'democratist' that Paul Lennon was,' Mr McKim said.
