The Tasmanian Greens today said that after previously being a national
leader in public policy on plastic bags through the actions of the Coles
Bay community, Tasmania is being left behind as Victoria begins a trial
of a 10c levy today.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that the state government's lack of
focus on environmental issues demonstrates a failure to understand the
opportunities which can be created by positioning Tasmania as a leader
on sustainability issues.
"Taking action to address the impacts of plastic bags is one of the
simplest environmental issues going around, and if Michelle O'Byrne
cannot deliver on this there is no chance that she will do anything
meaningful on major issues like forests, climate change and water
management."
"We have gone from being ahead of the pack to meekly watching other
states take strong action, which is simply not good enough for a state
that should lead the way on environmental issues.'
