Greens MP takes 'Super Saturday' action against power sell-off to O'Farrell's seat

Media Release: 16 August 2008

Greens NSW MP John Kaye will today join thousands of unionists, power workers, Greens members and concerned citizens urging voters in shopping centres around NSW to lobby their members of parliament to oppose the Iemma government's electricity privatisation legislation.

Dr Kaye said: "I will be spending the morning in Wahroonga in the heart of Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell's electorate, gathering signatures on petitions and handing out contact details for the local member.

"The future of the electricity industry is now in the Liberal's hands.

"If they vote against Treasurer Michael Costa's sell-off legislation when parliament reconvenes next month, then it's all over for privatisation.

"There are enough Labor MPs who will cross the floor to ensure that the Electricity Industry Restructuring Bill would be rejected.

"We want Mr O'Farrell to know that overwhelming opposition to the sell-off is widespread throughout NSW, including in his own seat.

"Today's 'Super Saturday' of activities around the state is the first step in ramping up the campaign against privatisation.

"Over the next four weeks we will be reminding the people of NSW that selling off the retailers and leasing out the power stations would be a disaster for the environment, household electricity bills, the state's economy and the workforce.

"If the Iemma government persists with its plans to privatise electricity, we want every members of parliament to know that their vote in parliament will be keenly watched by the people who put them there," Dr Kaye said.
