Kennett is wrong and should apologise
Greens MP Sue Pennicuik has condemned the comments made by Jeff Kennett in
relation to the sacking of trainer Ken Campagnolo in 2007 by the Boonie
Doon Football Club.
‘The comments made by Mr Kennett are highly regrettable and completely at
odds with his professed concern about the level of depression in our
community, especially as we know that sexual identity is a key factor in
youth suicide, particularly in rural areas.’
‘The remarks are inexcusable coming from a public figure like Mr Kennett,
who is a former Victorian premier, the president of Hawthorn Football Club,
the chairperson of Beyond Blue and a possible candidate for Lord Mayor of
Melbourne.’
‘Mr Kennett should resign or be terminated as President of Hawthorn
Football Club and of Beyond Blue.’
“He should also make a formal public apology to Mr Campagnolo.’
‘The AFL, Hawthorn Football Club and Beyond Blue should issue statements
making it clear that they do not support these views.’
‘Football and sport generally play a key role in the lives and identity of
many young people. I am supporting calls by the Australian Coalition for
Equality for the AFL to adopt a strong anti-homophobia policy, and for
Beyond Blue to fund programs tackling the effects of homophobia on same-sex
attracted youth, particularly in rural areas.’
