Rally for the River just the beginning if Government doesn’t listen

Australian Greens Senator for South Australia Sarah Hanson-Young has renewed the Greens’ call for the urgent restoration of environmental flows to the devastated River Murray.

“Last Friday’s Rally for the River on the steps of Adelaide’s Parliament House is just the beginning of organised actions to put pressure on the Government to act swiftly on this environmental catastrophe,” Senator Hanson-Young said.

“October is the deadline that the scientists have declared, by which new water must be released into the river system if there is any chance of saving it.

“You can bet more demonstrations are being planned for the coming months to send a message to the decision-makers in Canberra – act now or our river will die.

Senator Hanson-Young will be moving a motion in the Senate to secure the release of water stored further upstream, and purchase water from major storages in northern New South Wales.

She urged the Prime Minister to take leadership on the issue. ”Go on, Mr Rudd - give the river a drink before Christmas,” she said.

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young will be attending the rally at Goolwa next Sunday August 10 from 11am in support of the River Murray.
