HARTLAND SUPPORTS TAXI DRIVERS CAMPAIGN FOR SAFETY
Colleen Hartland has spoken in support of the taxi drivers, having joined
them in their protest yesterday afternoon.
"I visited the protest with the drivers for two hours yesterday afternoon,
and spoke to the drivers about their concerns," said Colleen Hartland,
Greens MLC for Western Metropolitan Region.
"I use taxis after late sittings at Parliament, and I often talk to the
drivers. They are often young Indian students, and they have to deal with
racism and fear of violence."
"I don’t believe that anybody should have to encounter racism, violence
and threats in their workplace - or anywhere else."
"I will raise their concerns in Parliament next week."
"The drivers should take up the offer to meet with the Minister. I urge
the Minister to treat this occupational health and safety matter with the
respect and seriousness it deserves, and act quickly to bring about some
real solutions."
"This kind of violence would not be tolerated in any other unionised
workplace," said Ms Hartland.
