Unions back Greens' stand over WorkCover

The Rann Labor Government has seriously underestimated the depth of
anger in the union movement over its controversial changes to WorkCover
laws, says Greens MLC Mark Parnell.

"You can't attack vulnerable workers and their families and not expect a
massive backlash," he said.

The Premier recently declared "we're a bloody sight better for working
people than the alternative".

In a joint media conference this morning flanked by union leaders, the
Greens MLC forecast a long and fiery debate in the Upper House, with
over 100 amendments to the controversial legislation.

"Mr Rann and Mr Foley take their union heartland for granted at their
peril. They think they can firewall any long term damage. They are
wrong.

"A political party that fails to stand up for the people it was put
there to represent is on slippery slope to oblivion. What's the point of
having a Labor Government in power when they act like Tory
conservatives?"

"Voters are sick and tired of politicians saying they represent one
thing and then turning around and doing the exact opposite.

"The Greens have been inundated by offers of support from unionists,
community groups and injured workers all saying the same thing: the
Government has got it wrong.

"This debate once again demonstrates the vital importance of having two
houses of Parliament.

"If there was no Upper House in South Australia these destructive laws
would already be in place and wreaking their damage on injured workers.

"The Greens once again call on Labor to stand up for its heartland and
put a stop to these destructive WorkCover laws" he said.
