The Tasmanian Greens welcomed today's announcement that Mr David Porter
has been appointed as Tasmania's newest Supreme Court Justice.

Greens Deputy Leader and Shadow Justice Spokesperson Nick McKim MP said
that Mr Porter is an excellent choice, and wished him well.

"Mr Porter has had a stellar legal career, and I have no doubt that he
will continue to distinguish himself in his new role," Mr McKim said.

Mr McKim also said that it is a shame that he had heard about Mr
Porter's appointment via the media, and suggested that the government
should have consulted with both the Liberals and the Greens while
considering candidates for the Supreme Court vacancy.

"The Attorney-General should have consulted with both Opposition
parties, but let's face it, transparency isn't this government's strong
suit, and this does not change the fact that Mr Porter is an excellent
choice."
